Nowitzki on former Mavs draft pick: Self-proclaimed ‘gym rat’ took naps over Dirk’s early workouts

Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki recently joined The Ben & Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] recently to talk about his latest season and the upcoming draft. Here are some highlights:

Watching the lottery, I loved your reaction to it. What was your take on the NBA lottery result?

Dirk: “If you look at our history of drafts, where we ended up, it’s just been bad luck for the Mavs. I don’t know why. But every time we’re projected to have a high pick, we always end up the team that slips. I don’t know why that is, but anyways, that’s just how I felt that night. I was like if there’s one team slipping, of course it’s the Mavs. So, that’s why I tweeted that out, and I guess it was funny.”

Do you watch these guys projected to be top picks?

Dirk: “A little bit. I get more and more into it as we get closer. And then obviously we do bring some guys in for workouts, and since I’m there anyway over the last couple years – I was there working out, getting ready or staying ready or lifting – I met all of them. I watched their workouts. I’ll do the same again this year once we get a little closer to the draft. Like I said, it won’t change much.

“I don’t watch college that much. I don’t watch EuroLeague. So, I don’t really have that much of an opinion. I’ve got to trust in our scouts … They’ve been watching these guys all season, or some of them even longer than just one season. At some point you just have to trust their opinion, and that’s why they make the big bucks.”

On recognizing fellow players that are true ‘gym rats’ and not just ones who say they are…

Dirk: “That’s tough. In a conversation? That’s tough. I guess you’ll never know until you really see it. But obviously you do research on the guys. Talk to their college guys, their college coaches, high school even, see what they’re like, what their attitudes are. You just do your research. Do your homework.

“I’ll always remember there was one guy, one year – I don’t even remember who it was. We drafted him. It was a long time ago. And he goes, ‘I’m a gym rat. Whenever you’re in the gym, I’m in the gym.’

“Next season rolls around, and he really was there early, but I never could see him. He wasn’t working out. So, we found out later he was in a downstairs bathroom sleeping. He must have gone out all night, and he had to show up let’s say at 9, but practice wasn’t until 11. So, from 10 to 10:30 – nobody found him. He must have taken a little snoozer somewhere.

“No, I’m sure there’s guys that work hard, and we’ve just got to find them.”
